The basket
A year of what you buy
Say how much of each item you use, and the page adds up the deaths and injuries linked to making it — with its range, the three items that account for most of it, and what the total leaves out.
A year of what one person buys accounts for a small fraction of one death, and the same number turned around is one death a year for every so many people who buy the same way. Both are floors, and neither includes using the products.
Nothing you enter leaves this device. The basket is kept in this browser, not on a server — there is no account — and a shared link carries it after the # sign, which browsers never send to a server.

What you use
Only the finished products the model has a figure for. The figure beside each is for one item, from the calculation named with it; the basket multiplies it by how many you use in a year.
Scenario Economic-embedded, using FIGARO 2023. Each figure is the middle result of 2,000 runs of the calculation, with the range that holds nine in ten of them beside it, and the grade that range earns.
Your year, as the model counts it
Enter how much of anything above you use, and the year’s total appears here.

How the sum is made
Each item’s published figure per item, times how many you use a year. Nothing is recalculated: the page adds the stored figures and rounds the total once, to two meaningful digits.
The range adds up all the low ends together and all the high ends together, as if every item’s uncertainty moved the same way. Much of it does, because every figure comes from the same records of harm — and adding the ends this way gives the wider, safer range.
The basket gets the grade of its least certain item. If any item is graded INDICATIVE, the total is shown as a range only.
What this leaves out
- Using the products. Driving the car, charging the phone, running the washing machine: none of it is here, and for a car it is probably the larger part of its harm. Only making things is counted — the production phase.
- Harm the model cannot link to a product. Each figure counts only the harm it can trace to a raw material in the product’s list of materials, so every figure — and this total — is a floor.
- Everything not listed. Housing, energy, travel, services and most food are not in this basket at all. Of the finished products the model knows, these have no figure yet: Bedsheet set, Chair, Jacket, Leather shoes, Mattress, Table, Towel, Trainers, Game console, LED bulb, Refrigerator, Tablet, Television, Washing machine, Beef, Beer, Bread, Chicken, Milk, Pasta, Rice, Sugar, Wine, Air travel, Bicycle, Bus travel, Electric bicycle, Motorcycle, Train travel.
- Any comparison between people. There is no average to beat and no ranking. The page compares a way of buying with itself, multiplied.
