Sources and licences

An estimate of how many people were harmed making something is only as good as the data behind it. This page is that data: who published it, on what terms, which version was used, and what has to be said about it.

HumanToll uses openly licensed data and nothing else. 25 sources are registered: 16 to be loaded, and 9 considered and not used, each with its reason. A source whose terms nobody has read and confirmed cannot be loaded: the software refuses, rather than relying on someone remembering.

Two claims, two records

“These terms have been read” and “this dataset is covered by those terms” are two different statements, and treating them as one is how a project ends up citing a licence nobody checked. Each licence is read once. Each source is checked separately against the publisher’s own web page, and the page that was read is recorded with the date and the name of the person who read it.

The software needs both before it loads a single record. A source whose licence forbids commercial use needs one thing more: a permission recorded for it — the publisher’s written permission, or the project’s own reading of the terms, shown as waiting until the publisher confirms it. HumanToll is a research project, but whether a use counts as non-commercial is for the publisher to say, and a convenient reading of somebody else’s licence is not a permission.

Every intended feed has had its terms read and its clearance recorded — the page that was read, the publisher’s written permission, or the confirmation still awaited. There is still no death toll on this site, for a different reason: a toll needs a range and a successful test on past years, and the model has neither yet.

The feeds this model is built on

Each one is here because it is openly licensed and anyone can check it. “Loaded” names the stage of the project that brings it in; a source that has not reached its stage yet holds no data here.

Attribution

Giving credit is a condition of the licences, not a courtesy. Every version of data actually used is listed here with the wording its licence asks for, built from the version itself so it always matches what was loaded. The same credit travels with every answer from the API (the programming interface) and every download.

Credit lines are not translated. A licence notice is a legal statement in the language its terms are written in, just as a bibliography is not translated.

Versions of data actually used

One row per download, and a download is never changed afterwards. When a publisher corrects a year, that is a NEW version; the old one is kept and marked as replaced, so a figure published from it still points to the file that produced it.

Considered and not used

These would improve the model and are left out on purpose. Each one is kept in the project with its licence, how often it is updated and the reason it is not used, so the decision stays visible instead of becoming a gap nobody remembers choosing.

Considered and not used
Source What it would give Licence Why not
ACLED — Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Would give near-real-time political violence with richer event typing, and an independent check on UCDP. Non-commercial research grant (publisher-specific) ACLED's free tier is for non-commercial use. Whether this research project's use fits it was asked on 2026-09-23, and no reply has come yet. Kept as a stub because ACLED is the best available VALIDATION of UCDP.
EXIOBASE 3 Would give a global MRIO: 44 countries and five rest-of-world regions, 1995-2024, environmentally extended. EXIOBASE licence Permitted in writing by the EXIOBASE team on 2026-09-22 for non-commercial use, under the EXIOBASE licence, a custom derivative of CC BY-NC-SA. Not built: OECD ICIO carries the global extension, and names DR Congo and Nigeria where EXIOBASE has one RoW Africa.
EMERGING multi-regional input-output table (V2) Would give a second global MRIO: 245 economies by 133 sectors for 2015, 2018, 2021 and 2023. Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Four benchmark years rather than a series, its own 133-sector classification, and 245 x 133 = 32,585 rows and columns: an 8.5 GB dense matrix, past the engine's 6 GB ceiling. Kept for producer countries OECD ICIO leaves in its rest of the world, and as a second opinion for S20.
Eora26 / Eora full MRIO Would give 190-country MRIO coverage and a longer time series than FIGARO. Proprietary — licensed individually Commercial use requires a paid licence. FIGARO and OECD ICIO carry the model, and the ground only Eora would cover is a published coverage limit, not a covered one.
UN Comtrade Would give bilateral trade at HS-6 as each country reports it, unreconciled. UN Comtrade — policy on use and re-dissemination For internal use only: a for-profit analytics application needs a licence to distribute with a fee, and re-dissemination a premium subscription. Replaced by CEPII BACI, built from the same declarations under an open licence.
PlasticsEurope Eco-profiles (LCI datasets) Would give cradle-to-gate LCI for polypropylene, ABS and PET — the polymer mass 23 sourced bills of materials carry as an unnamed input. Non-commercial research grant (publisher-specific) Reproduction is authorised except for commercial purposes, as quoted by the owner from plasticseurope.org. Permission was requested on 2026-09-21 and no reply has come.
UN Comtrade Premium Would give bulk download and no rate limit — an operational convenience, not better data. Proprietary — licensed individually Subscription. The free tier answers the modelling question; the premium tier only answers it faster.
IHME Global Burden of Disease Would give the best C3/C4 population attributable fractions, YLLs and DALYs that exist. Non-commercial research grant (publisher-specific) Permitted: IHME confirmed in writing on 2026-09-24 that this research project may use GBD under its free non-commercial agreement. Not built yet: C3 and C4 still use the attributable fractions computed here.
UN Statistics Division classification registry Would give ISIC Rev.4 and COICOP structures and the official ISIC Rev.3-to-Rev.4 correspondence, from the body that maintains them. United Nations Terms of Use The registry states no licence of its own and links to the general UN Terms of Use, which permit "personal, non-commercial use, without any right to resell or redistribute them or to compile or create derivative works therefrom". A concordance is a derivative work. Checked 2026-09-09.

The licences

What each set of terms allows. “Read” means a person read the terms and recorded the page they read — on its own that clears no source.

What is missing, and why

A source that added nothing because an access key was missing looks exactly like a source that had nothing to add — unless somebody writes the difference down. Every skipped source is recorded, and any figure that depended on it gets a lower confidence grade for it.

Citing this list

This list is part of the method, not an extra. If you are checking a HumanToll figure, this page and the methodology together account for everything that went into it.

Questions

Why is there no data on this page yet?

Because reading the licence comes before the download. The software refuses to load a source whose terms nobody has read and checked against the publisher’s own page, and that reading is deliberately slower than the programming.

Why not just use the best available data?

For two of the four kinds of harm, the best data is the Global Burden of Disease study from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), which is free for non-commercial use only. HumanToll is a research project, but a licence that depends on who is using the data is for its publisher to interpret, so the project asked IHME rather than rely on its own reading. IHME has confirmed in writing that this project may use the study under its free non-commercial agreement, and the reply is kept on file. It is not loaded yet: until it is, those two kinds of harm use shares of deaths worked out here. That substitute is genuinely worse, the methodology says so, and the confidence grades reflect it.

Is HumanToll a commercial project?

No. HumanToll is a research project. The pages, the method, this list and, once they pass their checks, the estimates are there to be read, cited and checked. Advanced access to the data through the API — larger volumes or bulk data beyond what the pages show — is by arrangement for now: contact us at info@quiescence.eu.

What happens when a publisher restates a year?

It becomes a new version with its own file fingerprint, and the old one is marked as replaced rather than overwritten. A figure published from the old version keeps pointing to the file that actually produced it.

Can I download the raw source data here?

No. HumanToll publishes its own results and sends you to the publisher for the original data. Some sources allow their data to be passed on and some do not; rather than keep two rules, the project keeps one, and every source above is named, linked and dated so you can get it yourself.
