Fuentes y licencias

Una estimación de cuántas personas resultaron dañadas al fabricar algo vale exactamente lo que valen los datos que hay detrás. Esta página son esos datos: quién los publicó, bajo qué condiciones, qué versión se usó y qué hay que decir sobre ellos.

HumanToll funciona con datos de licencia abierta y con nada más. Hay 25 fuentes registradas: 16 previstas para su ingesta y 9 consideradas y no implementadas, cada una con su motivo. Una fuente cuyas condiciones nadie ha leído y confirmado no puede cargarse: el cargador se niega, en lugar de depender de que alguien lo recuerde.

Dos afirmaciones, dos registros

«Estas condiciones se han leído» y «este conjunto de datos está bajo esas condiciones» son afirmaciones distintas, y tratarlas como una sola es la forma en que un proyecto acaba citando una licencia que nadie comprobó. Una licencia se revisa una vez, de forma centralizada. Una fuente se verifica aparte, contra la propia página del editor, y esa página queda registrada con la fecha y con quién la leyó.

El cargador exige ambas cosas antes de escribir una sola fila. Una fuente cuya licencia prohíbe la reutilización comercial necesita algo más: un permiso registrado a su nombre —el permiso escrito del editor, o la lectura de las condiciones por parte del operador, mostrada como pendiente hasta que el editor la confirme—. HumanToll es un proyecto de investigación, pero decidir si un uso es no comercial le corresponde al editor, y una lectura conveniente de la licencia de otro no es un permiso.

Todas las fuentes previstas tienen sus condiciones leídas y su autorización registrada, con la página que se leyó, el permiso escrito del editor o la confirmación aún pendiente. Sigue sin haber ninguna cifra de víctimas en este sitio, por otro motivo: una cifra así necesita un intervalo de incertidumbre y una prueba retrospectiva, y el modelo aún no tiene ninguno de los dos.

Cada una está aquí por tener licencia abierta y ser verificable de forma independiente. «Ingesta» indica la sesión que la incorpora; una fuente que aún no ha llegado a su sesión no aporta ningún dato aquí.

Una fuente que no aportó nada porque faltaba su clave es idéntica a una fuente que no tenía nada que aportar, salvo que alguien anote la diferencia. Cada fuente omitida queda registrada, y cualquier cifra que dependiera de ella lleva por ello un grado de confianza menor.

¿Por qué todavía no hay datos en esta página?

Porque la revisión de la licencia va antes que la descarga. El marco se niega a ingerir una fuente cuyas condiciones nadie ha leído y confirmado contra la propia página del editor, y esa revisión es deliberadamente más lenta que el código.

¿Por qué no usar sin más los mejores datos disponibles?

Para dos de los cuatro canales de daño, los mejores datos son el Global Burden of Disease del IHME, gratuito solo para uso no comercial. HumanToll es un proyecto de investigación, pero una licencia que depende de quién usa los datos la interpreta su editor, así que el proyecto se lo preguntó al IHME en lugar de apoyarse en su propia lectura. El IHME ha confirmado por escrito que este proyecto puede usar el GBD bajo su acuerdo gratuito de uso no comercial, y la respuesta está archivada con las pruebas del proyecto. El GBD aún no está cargado: hasta que lo esté, esos dos canales usan fracciones atribuibles calculadas aquí. Ese sustituto es realmente peor, la metodología lo dice y los grados de confianza asumen el coste.

¿HumanToll es un proyecto comercial?

No. HumanToll es un proyecto de investigación. Las páginas, el método, este registro y, cuando superen la validación, las estimaciones están para leerse, citarse y comprobarse. El acceso avanzado a la API —volúmenes o datos masivos más allá de lo que sirven las páginas— se concede por ahora mediante acuerdo: contáctenos en info@quiescence.eu.

¿Qué ocurre cuando un editor corrige un año?

Pasa a ser una versión nueva con su propia suma de verificación, y la anterior se marca como sustituida en lugar de sobrescribirse. Una cifra publicada a partir de la versión antigua sigue apuntando al archivo que realmente la produjo.

¿Puedo descargar aquí los datos originales?

No. HumanToll publica resultados derivados y le remite al editor para los datos originales. Algunas fuentes permiten la redistribución y otras no; en lugar de mantener dos reglas el proyecto mantiene una, y cada fuente de arriba está nombrada, enlazada y fechada para que pueda obtenerla usted mismo.
